Inside the beehive.

Here's a look at both sides of the frames in the lower box of a Warre style beehive after the winter. The white capped cells are filled with honey.

The bees built off the wall of the frame, the gap was a bit wider and they were able to double the number of cells in that section of honeycomb.
The Queen bee is labeled with green paint
Some cells have bees, the capped cells in the image below are filled with honey.

I'll be posting some pictures of my new UV printing box soon, and hopefully having enough time for more art prints. For now, enjoy the fireplace.

Tintypes and Blue Eyes

This is just a cell phone pic of a recent portrait with a blue eyed polish model. As you can see in the (model's) right eye, the blue eyes absolutely glow in the tintype. I haven't scanned or varnished this plate yet, but even with about half of the strobe power I would have liked for this portrait it looks incredible.

My more portable darkroom is working well and over the holidays I'm going to build the plan I've designed for an 8x10 (and 4x5) wet plate camera with film holders so I can take the camera body out of the darkroom and into the world. This should let me do some indoor 8x10 tintypes this winter, if I can get a hold of a 4800W power pack I know about.

If that make no sense but you're still reading, thanks! Stop by sometime and I'll tell you about tintypes, or tell me to not do that and I'll just make you a nice tintype photo. I'll also be shooting a series of 4-6 8x10 portraits this week, and if that works out I'll post scans on the blog.

A small change to the schedule, now I'll also be shooting on 9/12, Friday, and only in the late afternoon on Saturday.
Here are a few sample of some tintype I've done in the past, the originals of these are all printed on sheets of black aluminum and are one of a kind. I'll be shooting 4x5 and 8x10 tintype portraits this Sunday 9/7/14 and next weekend.

Trapper Mine
Trapper Mine
Trapper coal mine is located in Craig, CO, where I just spent a short week with a group of photographers shooting for the tourism and the chamber of commerce. There were a large number of venues and a busy week, here are just a couple photos from Trapper Coal mine, supplying the nearby power plant with fuel to produce electricity for the area. Below is the power plant converting the coal to electricity.

Tintype lighting improved!

Jeff - Tintype
Since the last test I added some light to my tintype test, about 25% more than I was using before. This was with prepared collodion that was about a month old, so I think this same lighting with fresh collodion will let me use a soft box and back the lights off some. This was taken with bare bulbs just out of frame.

If you're in Denver and interested in having a tintype taken let me know. I shooting 8x10" and 4x5", this was a 4x5" plate.

Special thanks to Jeff Mentzer for not only being a sea captain in the freezing cold "rain" but also for staying up until 3am modeling for tintypes.

And here's a picture of the pleasant "outdoor studio" we were shooting in.
